The Problem With "Just Do More"

Every training program hits the same fork in the road: how much more should I do? More sets? More weight? More sessions per week? The instinct is always to add — but the research is clear that how you add matters far more than how much.

Get it right and you get stronger, faster, more resilient. Get it wrong and you get injured, burnt out, or stuck on a plateau that won't budge.

Scaling is not about doing more. It is about doing the right amount more, at the right time, relative to what your body has already adapted to.
Acute vs. Chronic Load

The most useful idea in modern load management is deceptively simple: split your training load into two windows.

Acute load reflects the stress you're placing on your body right now. Chronic load reflects the fitness base you've built over the longer term. The relationship between the two — the acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR) — tells you whether you're training in a sustainable zone or flirting with injury.

Tim Gabbett and colleagues studied over 400 elite rugby league players across two full seasons and found that when acute load spiked too far above chronic load, injury risk climbed dramatically1.

The Sweet Spot

The research points to an optimal ratio range. Stay within it and you're building fitness. Push beyond it and you're accumulating risk faster than your body can recover.

The sweet spot isn't a fixed number — it shifts as your chronic load changes. Build the base first, and the ratio stays manageable as you push harder.

Gabbett's data showed that players with a high chronic load — meaning they were well-conditioned — had lower injury risk at any given ACWR than players with a low chronic load1. A robust training history is protective.


Why Chronic Load Is the Real Goal

This is the part most people miss. The ACWR isn't just a ratio to watch — it's a ratio you manage by building chronic load over time. A higher chronic load means your body can tolerate more acute stress without breaking.

A 2025 critical review of training load research by Qin, Li, and Chen confirmed this across multiple sports and populations: chronic training load is consistently associated with improved performance and reduced injury rates2. It is the foundation that makes progressive overload possible.

Don't chase the ratio.
Build the base.

A higher chronic load lets you push harder with less risk. The ratio follows the foundation — not the other way around.

The Practical Rules

You don't need to calculate ratios every session. These principles capture the science in plain language:

  • The 10% rule: Don't increase total weekly load by more than roughly 10% from one week to the next. This keeps the acute:chronic ratio in the safe zone.
  • Build before you push: Spend 3–4 weeks establishing a consistent training rhythm before adding intensity or volume. Chronic load needs time to accumulate.
  • Deload deliberately: Every 3–6 weeks, reduce load by 30–40% for a week. This lets chronic load "catch up" to acute load and resets the ratio.
  • Respect the spikes: A single very hard session after a period of low training is the most dangerous scenario. Ramp up gradually, especially after time away.
  • Track what you do: You can't manage load if you don't measure it. Consistent logging makes the invisible patterns visible.
